Juniors Matches:

Report on Aegon Boys U14 2D v Coombe Wood Cowboys - Sat 7th May 2016

Last Saturday, our boys played another Aegon match, this time against Coombe Wood Cowboys. Mathias and Marcus started their singles rubbers on a very sunny and warm afternoon at Ham & Petersham home courts. Mathias' match started very balanced, with both players tentatively testing each other out, trying to find the weaknesses in each others' game. Trading games, they worked their way through the set, with no player pulling ahead by more than a single game. However, just at the right moment, Mathias had sussed out his opponent and managed to break serve to a 5:4 lead. With a strong service game, he closed out the set 6:4. This visibly took its toll on the other player, and in the second set, Mathias rushed ahead into the lead with growing confidence, constructing his points and finishing them off with more aggressive shots - while in the first set, they often failed to find the court, in the second, more often than not he managed to place them in the corners, unreachable for his opponent. He sealed the match 6:4, 6:1 after approximately 80 minutes.

Meanwhile, Marcus had no mercy on his opponent. He used his patience and excellent ability to retrieve almost every ball and keep it in play, until either the other player risked too much and missed a shot, or Marcus found himself in a position to place the ball in the corner or just across the net, unplayable for his opponent. With his variety of hard baseline shots, drop shots and volleys, he always managed to surprised his opponent and allowed him to run away with the match, eventually finishing 6:1, 6:0 in an hour, never seeming out of control or at risk of going for too much. A great display of control, patience and skill!

With their confidence high and the experience of having played doubles together in last year's competition, Mathias and Marcus left the visiting side no chance in the doubles rubber, racing to a 6:1, 6:0 win in record time, taking the maximum 6 points from the match.

After 2 matches, the team now have 10:2 points and lead their group. Well done boys! Keep it up!

Our next fixture is on Sunday 22 May at home vs. Tennis England. The courts are booked for 2:30pm, and Mathias and Archie are due to play this match.

Thank you all for your support and this great opportunity for the boys!

11th May 2016 - Message from James Kober:

I would like to add that on the weekend we also won both our U12 boys team matches, our U14 girls match, our U16 boys match & our men had a great win at Guildford Tennis Academy.
Unfortunately our other U14 boys lost a very close match 4-2 to Tennis England who had a 5.1 playing for them and our U12 girls also lost a close one, 4-2 as well..
All in all though, 6 matches won on the weekend is a superb result.
